The AllTrails Story
Founded in 2010, the AllTrails mission is “To help the world find its way outside.” The company was built on the belief that time spent outdoors leads to greater health and happiness, and that trails should be as easy to discover, research, and navigate as public road systems.
Today, AllTrails hosts the largest collection of trail information globally, allowing users to find, research, and navigate over 450,000 trails worldwide. In addition to its trail maps and navigation capabilities, the app allows users to rate trails, post pictures, log their activities, and track stats like distance and speed.
AllTrails & Spectrum
When Spectrum invested in AllTrails in 2018, the company had just 12 employees – but the potential to become the leading brand in its category. Spectrum identified multiple areas of accelerated growth potential in the company, including international expansion.
“The folks at Spectrum opened my eyes to how much bigger this company could be,” said CEO Ron Schneidermann. “For the first time, we started thinking about TAM on a global scale.”
As part of their global expansion strategy, the company extended its community beyond a dedicated core of outdoor enthusiasts. The team set out to invest in the product, expand trail coverage, and grow its global user base.
Between 2018 and today, AllTrails has made significant improvements to its platform – releasing a host of product developments, including 3D immersive video, expanded community features, responsive weather conditions updates, curated National Parks guides, and improved on-trail navigation. And it has successfully gone global – its app is now available in 14 different languages and has trail coverage in every continent and country around the world.
Over the course of the partnership, AllTrails has grown revenue by more than 10x and now has over 200 employees. In 2023, AllTrails was named Apple’s iPhone App of the Year.
